SCRUTH'S BLOG ENTRY
THE FSU LIFESTYLE
Well I'm halfway through my 5th week of this Fall's semester. And things have not been going as great, training-wise, as back home for summer. I know all college's are huge party school, but FSU is by far one of the worst, or best, depends how you see it I guess. It's in Tallahassee, which, although the capital of Florida, has very little to do. No beaches, fancy malls, big movie theaters, theme parks, etc. It's main population is of lower working class, with a handful of wealthy politicians who live outside the city. And smack in the middle are three colleges, FSU, FAMU, and TCC, teaching almost 100,000 undergraduates. And the main thing to do here is go to the bars. Not trying to complain, and have nothing against those who love to go out. That lifestyle just isn't the most condoning to a healthy, fitness oriented lifestyle.
Combine the FSU lifestyle, with the plain college lifestyle and things get harder yet.
So far I think I've been making the best of things, or at least am getting there. I ride my bike the mile to the gym and the 1.5 miles to classes. I walk to the grocery store. My training is nothing like what it was over summer, but it's decent, I try to make it count. My overall reps and sets have dropped a bit. I've been doing chest/tri's on Monday, running Tuesday night, shoulder/abs on Wednesday, running Thursday night, and back/bi's on Friday. (Yes, for the four weeks I have neglected legs. But I assure you I will be throwing them back in my routine within the next two weeks.) I'm going to try and throw a few short runs in whenever possible on my lifting days. And I'm going to try and get one swim in on the weekend. (On weekends I've been working about 20 hours, split between Sat & Sun, so after that I've been pretty beat.) I've been doing 16 sets, split over 4 exercises for larger muscles and 12 sets split over four exercises for smaller groups.
My diet has shrunk. Just within the last two or three weeks of summer I got my diet to where I wanted it to be (with the help of FitDay.com). I got my protein, fat, carbs, and calories all in place. Then bam! off to school and my calories are probably about 500 cals short of where they should be. Fat up, protein down. Can't blame anything but myself. But just got my 10 lb bag of ON 100% whey Strawberry, so I'm going throw in a shake between classes and hopefully I can get myself closer to where I want to be.
The lower cals has taken an affect, my arms have shrunk almost .5 inches! But I've been spending a little bit more time on RA and as usual, I feel inspired! I want to be able to come on the site and tell everyone how great things have been going!
So that's my rant for now. Felt good to post all the little things in my head, help me to visualize everything going on and now and can make a plan and act on it!
Hope all is going well and all you college kids are keeping the grades up.
Good luck to all competing in upcoming shows or just training hard in their off-season!
P.S. Don't take any of my Tallahassee rant to mean I'm not a true 'Nole! Haha, I love FSU and the Seminole! And with all the hassles here, I've had some great times and met some great friends. And I'm learning a lot, which is what I'm paying all the money for right?

The college lifestyle is definitely not the same as a fitness-oriented one. It's awesome to see that you're maintaining focus and still keeping up the workouts. I have a hard time keeping up with workouts when the tests start coming up (1 tomorrow, 1 on Friday). It's crazy, but you know you're making your way to a higher place. Keep up the hard work. It does pay off, eventually. :)

scruth, I fell the same way. Just keep your head up and legs moving. You'll find the rythm eventually.

Scruth, I hear you 100% I work full-time at my florida college and am taking three classes. The diet can be the first thing to go when in college. I encourage you keep focus and be aware of changes you need to make. That awareness lets you know that you have the potential and ability to do better and great things!
