PEOPLES IDEAS ON FITNESS
What prompted me to write this are all the comments I get when I tell people I body build. I had a comment on one of my online profiles asking if I once used to be a man. It bothered me at first, but I made reason in my head why someone would say that. Their image of “fit” is thrown off. A lot of women that want to get fit and healthy are afraid to pick up the weights. They don’t want to look “manly.” Muscularity is personal taste. It helps to have a professional give you a real perspective. Someone is always going to put their two cents in no matter how big or small you are.
When I first got into working out, I was nervous about pushing heavy weight. After I achieved a satisfying level of fitness, I started to increase weight. People started to notice a difference in me and how I was becoming more athletic. That’s when all the comments started. The one I heard most was, “don’t get too big.” Excuse me? What if that was my goal? Go eat your subway sandwich and leave me alone! People’s ideas on bodybuilding are so misconstrued.
Most of society’s ideas put pressure on women. I don’t want to sound extreme, but aren’t we all a slave to trends? The only people that give me crap are the ones that have no idea about exercising. Unfortunately, it was sometimes people close to me. I’m sorry to say, but take closer look at yourself before you begin critiquing someone else. OK, sometimes people are just trying to help. They mean well, but hearing it so many times gets a little irritating. I know I’m not the only girl that hears it. If you want to lift weights, go ahead. Don’t let people’s comments defer you from your goals.

I agree with Morecowbell. Many young ladies and women listen to others who say they will gain muscle mass and be too bulky. Lifting weights does not work like that and it depends on your goals. Glad to see you are ignoring the people in the mainstream. I like your humor about "go eat your subway sandwich and leave me alone"..I was laughing after that comment.

You sure hit the nail on the head! I have a boyfriend who is ex-military. I have been really dedicated to my training for a few months now and really seeing great changes, but he keeps throwing his 2 cents in. Saying just the things you mentioned above and that he knows best when I am working with a trainer and really studying bodybuilding. I told him to weigh himself on my bodyfat scale, and he has 20% bodfat! HA! That shut him up! Now if I can just ignore the other nay sayers....
