THE OL COP OUT

We’ve heard it, seen it… even felt it. The people who so quickly diminish our hard-fought efforts to be lean, strong, big, and well proportioned. Often, our achievements are written off as “gifts” of good genetics. Sometimes, they’ll accuse us of using steroids or other performance enhancing drugs. Other times, they attempt to minimize our efforts as an addiction, or even a sickness.

SHIFTIN INTO SECOND GEAR

I’m no stranger to weight manipulation. My “off season” weight might vary by as much as 40 lbs from my “competition” weight. Of course, unlike many of you, I don’t compete in sanctioned bodybuilding shows or power lifting meets. My stage is the beach. And, my judges are the people on that beach. Some might call this vanity, I think of it as reality. When all you’re wearing is swim trunks, it’s difficult to hide imperfections. So, the thought of being a beached white whale out there in front of everyone is what drives me to clean-up the ol’ diet and sprinkle some more cardio into the training routine.

THE GROOVE

We’ve all had ‘em. Those workouts when everything seems to click. Your confidence is high. You’re strong, so you’re movin’ the weight around easily. You not even dreadin’ the cardio as much as usual. You just feel great. You’re in the groove.

CALORIE CONUNDRUM

Okay, you’ve cut your calories by the prerequisite 3,500, but you’re still not losing weight. Maybe there’s a problem with your math. Theoretically, creating an energy deficit equal to 3,500 calories should equate to a loss of about a pound of body fat. The question is: do you really know where to start counting?

The good news is your body is burning calories as you read this. The bad news is you’re probably not accounting for them.
