KRISTINA'S BLOG ENTRY
FEMALE BODY IMAGE
As I have mentioned before, I have gone in a new direction with my career. I now am Teaching Assistant at a private Middle School for math and science. This school is run independently of the curriculum taught in the public system so it gives the staff the freedom to open up the topics to cover. One of the ideas brought forth was to have class meetings that specifically address the girls in the 6th and 7th grade about body image. This is a crucial time for the girls where media and peers play a huge influence on how you perceive yourself and what is "attractive" or "cool." This is a time where cliques form and exclusion starts to wear on self-esteem.
The female staff is going to take some time to talk about body image and acceptance and what is defined as beautiful. As a fitness competitor, I am so excited to share my experience with body image and perception, especially in such a physique-driven sport. We hope to give varied outlooks and help build up having an open opinion about beauty, instead of being restricted to what we are fed through the media.
I will fill in more as we get this going, but I wanted to share my excitement to tie in my passion in this area with my "9-5" job.

I think that what your doing sounds wonderful. As someone who struggled with an eating disorder throughout jr. and senior high school I think its critical for young girls to understand what a healthy perception of themselves and their bodies is. Work like what your doing means more to them and to women like me than you realize. Thank you for being a positive role modelf for young women. :)
