BANISHING EMOTIONAL EATING

I know this is something that lots of people struggle with. I would love to say that I don't but...I know that I will try to stop myself and say whatever ____ (fill in the blank) chocolate, ice cream, whatever is the food or drink of choice will not make it better, will only keep me from my goals, will only make me feel bad...sometimes this works sometimes not...what do you all do when you find yourself consoling your sorrows in food?

Great topic! This is something that I used to struggle with a lot...and don't get me wrong, I still struggle with this from time to time! I always try and wait it out - I give myself 20 min and if I still REALLY want it, I allow myself a really small serving. But more times than not, I end up not really wanting it after 20 minutes has passed!

I use to battle with this to the point where I got fat, depressed on meds for the depression so I started looking at emotional eating like someone in an AA meeting, it became my drug only to give me a temporary fix, however not solving the problem, I keep alot of rice cakes on hand and almond butter or natty peanut butter and got through a pack still not the best thing but its better than all the other stuff out there that got me fat before.

I am glad to hear that athletes at your levels struggle with these things also. I have been a terrible emotional eater in the past but made a huge change in my life about 6 months ago. Every once in a while I slip up, but only a little! I think it's starting to be a habit/lifestyle for me now so it is getting easier! Plus, getting this excess fat off is harder than my time in the Marines or earning my college degree so that puts a damper on my late night exploits with the fridge!

Anything in moderation!! I love food, but if I indulge too much, I really feel crappy..

That is a great topic! For me, it would mainly be after a show. I use to go crazy and eat whatever i could get my hands on. i ended up paying a huge price because of it. After that, no matter how hungry i would be..i would remember what i had gone through. It just wans't a good feeling at all. Internally i felt terrible and externally, i looked awful.

Well if it is truly emotionally related then you need to find what the root of the casue is and fix that...I know you knew that was just saying.

BUT, one thing I have learned over the years is that if I find myself overindulging (or even indulging at all ) in the evenings then I am not feeding my body sufficiently throughout the daytime. Once I fixed this and made sure I kept my carbs pretty high both in quality and quantity, then when the evenings came along I would be fine for the most part and opt for my usual scheduled meals, while also throwing in a sugar free popsicle or 2. Of course I would also throw in a cheat meal once a week to keep it from going stale.

But, re-evlauate your diet. You MAY be dieting too strictly by not eating enough and not only causing hunger pains for bad food, but also eating away at your muscle..and eventually your metabolic rate.

You are absolutely right Tim when it comes to the "root" of the problem if you will. I think there is a difference though from all the different comments on what a binge might be whether from after a show or late night cravings vs emotional eating. I tend to think of them as 3 separate issues and more than likely stemming from different reasons. Only common thing among them is that usually you regret it and feel worse both phyiscally and mentally. I think though many of us feel better knowing that we are not the only ones who have faced this at one point or another.

Great discussion. On a sidebar I have to admit that Cat is one of the reason I have decided to enter my first figure shoe in May. I am on the petite side ~ 5"1' and 98 lbs and naturally lean consistently around 10-11% bodyfat. I have always thought I was too small to a show. I will never have flaring lats or enormous shoulder... However, after seeing your photos from the NPC Jr. Nat's and your stats I have decided to give it a try.
