You Can Transform and Even Compete
by: Kristenann - October 1st, 2008If you want to take it to the next level, you can! Competing is not an exclusive sport. At the local level, anyone can compete. There are no prerequisites, aside from getting an annual membership card for the organization that you choose to compete in. Of course, you do want to make sure that you are in tip-top shape before you get on that stage, so enlist the help of a knowledgable coach (one with experience in that type of competition prep!). Every body is different and responds differently to variations on diet, cardio and training and you need an experienced coach that can cater your program to your body's needs.
The diet is really 80% of it and that is the hardest part. You may eat the same meals every day for a few weeks and you need to eat every 2-3 hours. The more often you eat small, healthy meals, the less fat your body stores! Once you get used to that and accept the idea that you are simply eating to supplement your body and provide neccesary nutrients it needs to function, build lean muscle and burn fat; it gets easier. You have to get out of the habit of eating because something tastes good, or because you are depressed, etc. Think about what you put into your mouth, every time you eat.
As well, make sure that you drink plenty of water! I drink 1.5-2 gallons per day. The more you drink, the less your body holds onto, meaning less bloat!
Cardio... yes, I do lots of cardio. However, that does not neccesarily mean that you need to do as much as I do, or someone else. Some people can do 30 minutes, once a day and get lean. Many need to do two sessions of 30-40 minutes per day. My biggest struggle is getting lean (as opposed to building muscle), due to a thyroid disorder, so I do anywhere from 2-3 hours per day, during competition prep, or prep for an event. Again, an experienced coach can help you determine what is right for you.
Just remember, being fit and healthy is NOT an exclusive club and neither is competing. YOU have the power to decide if you want it bad enough and to be whoever it is you want to be!
Happy training!

This was a very good read and motivating. I have been working hard for two years now and have lost 140 lbs. I believe that I am in control of my own body. At age 46 I am in the best shape of my life and I will keep getting better.

Bluto - CONGRATS to you! You have taken control of your body and transformed! I really believe that it IS possible at any age to make the change and keep getting better! KEEP AT IT! I am helping a friend of mine transform and she is in her 50s and has two children. Let me tell you... she is the most motivated, determined woman. She has made MAJOR changes in the last 3 months and will be stepping on stage to compete in the spring. SHE made that happen, because she wanted it! We can do anything that we set our minds to... we are the only ones that have the control over our bodies and we decide what we want out of them.

Great points...especially for women who have an interest in the sport. I always encourage new interested competitors to make use of the local resources (trainers, coaches, pros and seasoned competitors) to get information and take the uncertainty and veil of "eliteness" out of competing.

I couldn't agree more on the fact that diet is 80%...that is so true. It wasn't until I actually sat down and scheduled out my diet that I started seeing TRUE results. Sure exercise helps and a person will notice some results from it...however, if you want REAL super exciting results...the diet is key. You've got a good post here!!!!!
Carido is something I struggle with too. I'm a newbie at contest prep (2 contests under my belt) and I have noticed it is hell on earth for me to lean out. I'm not sure WHAT the deal is. I can do diet x 10 and training out the butt, but it seems like I rarely get close to being as lean as I'd like to be. I am probably one that'll have to do 3 hrs of cardio a day to get ripped, but oh well!!! Gotta do what we've gotta do! I think I may need to get my thyroid checked (as you mentioned yours) but I don't think that is it... I do lose weight with diet/exercise noticeably but sometimes I think it is the TYPE of carido that I do. I need to incorporate more running, sprints, and hills. As of lately, that is working great for me!!!! :)
