Ohio State Bodybuilding Championships
by: Ben Hartman - September 21st, 2008I went home, shaved, threw on a few quick coats of ProTan, and then got spray tanned later that evening
woke up Saturday to see that ALL of the spray tan didn't set and I was pale as hell...with only a minimal coat of ProTan on, lol
I drove to the show super early, registered, and ended up drinking way too much water and way too much food for whatever reason (nervousness, poor judgement, etc.) and then got ROCKED by some absolutely amazing competitors
oh well....my primary show is 2 weeks away and I have a lot of mistakes I can rectify (basically...I won't be a dumbass for this next show). I'm also looking forward to seeing how I stack up against some natty competitors as I was a good bit out of my league despite holding my own against the second half of the class.
I have some crappy pics I got and when I can figure out how to post them I will
In terms of trying to fill out, dry out, etc. I did nothing until last minute as I hadn't planned on competing, and when I saw the monsters I'd be up against I figured I'd run a little experiment
so I starting eating my junky foods AND drinking water to see if I'd fill out without spilling...always gotta test a theory on myself before I'd ever recommend anyone else try it
and...well...it couldn't have gone worse, lol
I literally ate my last McD's hamburger and about 20oz. water when I realized I didn't have as much time as I thought, so I ran backstage at which point they yelled for all lightheavies to line up...NONE of us were even out of our sweats
I had just swallowed my burger, threw off my clothes, put on some pam spray very haphazardly, and walked on stage, lol
the rest of the day I just said screw it and went out to lunch and just stopped pounding the water so hard....ended up a little tigther for finals and I felt MUCH better not having all that food sitting in my stomach
word to the wise...when in doubt...don't eat and drink as much as possible 20 min. before prejudging (duh, lol)
if I had known in advance I was doing a show I would've loaded early (which I ended up doing anyways) and then kept water and sodium high all the way through (which I did anyways), BUT...I would've either eaten all that food and dropped water OR kept water high and not eaten as much shit (more than likely this one)
I give Skip a lot of credit for opening people's eyes on his skiploading/early loading which is something I stumbled upon in my own work awhile back
I definately fucked up my morning stuff by both "shitloading" per se along with drinking copius amounts of water, but hey....I had to give it a try to know 100% that it was a bad idea
PS - it was a bad idea

wow benn i have shitloaded plenty of times and water is a no, no bro! LOL cut water then start the shitload, I can easily see how it would wreck you, but hey like you said it was a learning experience so learn from it and be better for it bro, good luck on your next show, heck I didn't even know you were competing any time soon, but it is hard to keep up with everyone on RA isn't it :)

yes Brad I know not to do it....but seeing as it was a practice show, I just had to try ya know, lol
I've purposely kept quiet about my prep this season because I wasn't 100% sure I'd end up doing a show and I didn't want to tell everyone and then have to back out for work or school or something
odd thing is I didn't look all that bad...I was just so bloated from eating and drinking too much, too soon before prejudging started

Ben,
Like the others said...I had no idea you were competing! LOL You did look pretty good considering what you did to get ready. LOL
Goes to show you if you're conditioned, you can mess up bad...and still look good! LOL
I'm excited to see how your next show goes.
Good Luck bud!
