81When the show prep ends, and my body starts it's normalizing processes, I always go to the doctor to get a full check up, blood work, etc. This past week I went to the Dermatologist because when I was young I had a few suspicious moles that got removed. I had a few concerns again from my primary care doctor and I wanted to get everything taken care of now. With the tanning that I've been doing for shows, I'm walking the line for my skin health. He found one mole he wanted to remove immediately for biopsy. This past week I had it removed and can't train till Wednesday. I have a wonderful new scare (sarcasm!) and 7 stitches till the July 2nd.

Since I couldn't train, it was the perfect time to get my blood work done. Training, and especially intense training, can really effect your liver function results. It's better to have a few days off from training before you go in for your blood panel. I had the blood drawn today, and I'm looking forward to hitting the gym on Wednesday.

I love to compete, but competing isn't the healthiest condition for a persons body. You look amazing...and feel like crap. That's usually how competing goes. I feel it's my responsibility to myself, as well as my family, that I get my blood work taken at least 2-3 times a year. I want to make sure I'm healthy and address any concerns early before they become major issues.

I get a physcial every year and a total work up on my blood. With all the theremos, yo-yo diets etc, I want to amke sure thyroid, kidney and liver are working like they should. I went right after the Arnold Classic and everything was fine....except for my chlorestrol, I just had to laugh! I eat healthy so my brain just didnt understand. So just changed the diet changes.

Have you had issues in the past with Cholesterol Tera?

Last year after starting DC training and training legs the day before my blood work made my live function in the red zone. My doctor called me and was telling to stop everything. I had my liver function checked a week later after taking 3 days off before...and was fine. LOL

Joe,

There is no doubt that what we do to our bodies is extreme. I think this does tend to skew the results at times of lab work, blood draws and cholesterol screenings. Like you said address your health first then get back into the training. Best wishes and speedy recovery.

Paul,

Believe it or not we competitors do both. Its better to have a base tan before applying our sunless tanning products because it makes the color look better a more natural. (if that's possible) Otherwise some peoples skin looks orange or even a greenish brown depending on the tanning agent and the skin of the individual.

I no longer will be doing this though and will have to experiment now to find what works for my pale skin.

Allen, DC training is another level. It's more of a mental thing to work through, but it beats up your body as well.

Cindy, your posts throughout the year have inspired me to take better care of my health. Thanks! :)

I think it is so ironic at how people get the impression that we look like what healthy is supposed to be, but the truth is competing is anything but healthy! I think it's great that you keep on top of your health, prevention is your best weapon. I work in the surgical field and I see people everyday that have been in denial for years and they have waited too long and now drastic measures have to be taken, it is very sad.

Joe I'm glad you posted this blog up because it's important stuff most competitors don't think about often enough

I've got several cysts (sp?) I need looked at as soon as my summer cut phase is over with, and I stear as clear as possible from tanning anymore with my ghostly skin tone
